Limits

Amber from 90% of a limit, red past it. Your text stays on this page.

How to write one caption for every platform

  1. Write for the tightest limit first. If the post goes on X or a TikTok photo title, get the core of it into that space.
  2. Watch the bars. They turn amber at 90% of a limit and red once you're past it.
  3. Pick the platform that's over. The text past its limit is marked, so you can see exactly what would be cut.
  4. Trim or split. Cut the marked part, or move it to a first comment or the next slide.

How each platform counts

Platforms don't all count the same way. TikTok counts UTF-16 units, so most emoji use two. X weighs its 280: an emoji or a Chinese, Japanese or Korean character weighs 2, and a link weighs 23 however long it is. Where a platform doesn't say how it counts, the counter counts what you see, so one letter, space or emoji is one character.

Where the limits come from

Each limit is taken from the platform's own help or developer pages:

We couldn't find a Facebook post limit on Meta's own pages, so Facebook isn't on the list. When you want the captions written for you, try the free caption generator, or let Feedrick make the whole post.

Questions

Good to know.

What is the character limit for an Instagram caption?

2,200 characters, with at most 30 hashtags and 20 @ tags, according to Meta's Instagram API reference. The counter checks all three.

What is TikTok's caption limit?

TikTok's developer docs give 2,200 for a video caption, and 4,000 for a photo post description with a 90-character title. TikTok counts these in UTF-16 units, so most emoji use two.

How does X count characters?

A post can weigh 280. Most Latin letters, numbers and punctuation weigh 1; Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters and emoji weigh 2; and every link weighs 23 however long it is, because X shortens it.

Do emoji count as one character?

Here an emoji counts as one character, the way you see it, except where the platform documents otherwise: on TikTok an emoji is usually two or more UTF-16 units, and on X it weighs 2.

Why isn't Facebook on the list?

Every limit here comes from the platform's own help or developer pages. We couldn't find a Facebook post limit on Meta's pages, so we left it off rather than guess.

Is my text saved or sent anywhere?

No. The counting happens in your browser as you type, and nothing leaves the page.
